During his high school career Phil Cox scored 1,301 career points, the best all-time at Connersville. He also is the CHS leader in career rebounds with 905. He did all this in three years of varsity basketball.
In 1972 the Spartans won the IHSAA State Basketball Tourney. Phil Cox was named Mr. Basketball by the Indianapolis Star that spring.
Cox has been described as "a very special player" who "helped bridge racial divisions in Connersville in those years. He also brought enormous pride to the community."
In 2009 Cox was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
